Artificial Intelligence (AI) is surrounding us. Whether we scroll through our Facebook wall or watch Netflix, there is always an algorithm in the background that is constantly analyzing data and showing us results. And this is only going to increase in the future as more and more companies are adopting digitalization and using AI and machine learning to make operations more efficient, increase income, and improve our user experience. Will this, however, harm the users or make their life easier? There is a strong debate around this question but here we are going to explain what AI is, what is the data used, and how it can be associated with drones.

We spoke to Ndapile Mkuwu, a Crowddroning drone operator who gained many of her droning skills as a student at the UNICEF-sponsored African Drone and Data Academy (ADDA) in Malawi. She now works there as an instructor, teaching all things drones.

On 21 April GLOBHE hosted a webinar on the new EU drone regulations, speaking to industry experts about the changes and what they would mean for drone operators. One of the experts was Yves Morier who worked at EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) for 15 years before retiring in 2019. He had a big part in developing the regulations for the European Union. During the webinar, we asked Yves what he thought were the biggest differences between the new EU rules and the previous national ones.

In early 2021 new drone regulations rolled out across the EU in addition to Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Iceland, and Norway. Along with this change came new requirements for drone operators to get certified in order to operate drones both professionally and recreationally. The new requirement has been in place for 7 months, yet there is a significant gap between the number of drones circulating in each country and the number of drone operators holding a license.

The use of drones in telecom inspections has been common for several years. It is a proven method to increase safety, quality, and modernization of standards in data capture as opposed to the traditional methods of manually climbing to inspect that all components are intact. Telecom inspections are necessary to ensure that infrastructure is maintained not only for functionality but also for preventative safety measures. Faulty or damaged components can lead to failures in infrastructure and grow to become a safety concern if not treated or replaced in time. Drones help collect this critical data quickly, safely, and efficiently as an aid to engineers in the field.

It’s fairly safe to assume that we’ve grown tired of pandemic headlines after enduring a year of global hibernation. During this time a handful of industries managed to thrive while others struggled to survive. We saw businesses polish up their thinking caps to revive new ideas in order to adapt and overcome various challenges. The drone industry certainly experienced a shift as well, and it led to a push in identifying how drone technology can be an aid in the grand list of solutions through the lifecycle of a pandemic.

After having been delayed for half a year because of COVID-19, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) launched its new drone regulations on New Year’s Eve. Among other things, the new regulations mean having to register as a drone operator and get an updated remote drone operator certificate for anyone in the EU wanting to use their drone professionally.

Last week, Crowddroning by GLOBHE kicked off the drone part of a research project started by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The goal of the project is to identify mosquito breeding sites. By knowing where mosquitoes are laying eggs the larvae can be controlled through larviciding or modification to eventually reduce the number of adult mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite.

Like many Crowddroning drone operators, Nigerian Bunkunmi Dhikrullahi Shittu is not only a drone operator but also an expert in an entirely different field: microbiology. Some of that drone knowledge he learned at the African Drone and Data Academy (ADDA). And like others, he's found ways to combine his drone skills with his other ambitions.

Solar power is a force to be reckoned with as a contender in the race for fueling our daily lives with more sustainable electricity. Solar panel technology has been around for decades, but it’s only in recent years that we have seen an increase in investment towards building and maintaining solar power globally. Kondwani Mwale and Hope Kelvin Chilunga at Malawi’s Nkhwazi Aeros participated in our ongoing Crowddroning attempt to break the Guinness World Records for ”Largest Digital Album with Drone Imagery”. Rather than just breaking the record, the main goal of the attempt is to highlight how valuable drones are as tools to monitor the effects of climate change, thereby helping find solutions and preventive measures.

For Women's History Month, we wanted to highlight a few women in our community; Maria Bergsten is a partner in the investment firm VEQ, which invested in GLOBHE in 2021. VEQ invests in early-stage companies with innovative, digital, and scalable businesses, where technology is at the core of the product or how the company sells and delivers the product.

GLOBHE captures data quickly through local drone operators and automatically provides it to the UNCDD and the FAO via the Crowddroning platform. The geospatial engineers then feed this data to the AI model that analyzes it quickly to provide insights at record speed and incredible detail, which was challenging to achieve with the old traditional method. With GLOBHE working together with the UNCCD partners in this project, we can scale up this technology globally to monitor land restoration. Today, local communities benefit from this work by employing local drone operators, thus empowering the local economy.

When I began my journey with drones, the above quote was not that important; I found it on the internet before writing this article. But, looking back, I’m glad to be part of this global drone movement.
